Since 1987, hundreds of Christians from across our town volunteer to help make Holiday Bible Week happen. There’s a role for everyone – from spending the week with a particular age group to helping keep the site safe and friendly for everyone.

Volunteer Roles

Tent Helper

Working with children of a particular year group, our tent helpers are at the heart of the Holiday Bible Week team.

You’ll be led by a tent leader in a team of other tent helpers. It’s all about being a friendly face to the children in your tent and guiding them through all the fun activities HBW has to offer.

Hotline (Prayer Tent)

Volunteers in the Hotline tent engage children in talking to God (praying) in an open and supportive environment.

Kindness, empathy and a willingness to lend a listening ear are the name of the game for our Hotline volunteers.

Site – Tuck Shop

Our on-site tuck shop offers a range of sweets and treats, and a bookshop for books and mementos.

Volunteers in the tuckshop work to keep everything well stocked and ensure all the children can make their way though during their break time.

Main Tent – Tech Team

Covering everything light, sound, cameras and more – the main tent tech team run the daily show in the main tent.

While experience is useful, the team is happy to train up new volunteers. All we need is your enthusiasm and passion for all things technical.

Main Tent –  Puppets

The puppet team is a team of approximately 8 to 15 people, with ages ranging from 13 to 70. During the week we perform during the main session with a song and story, and practise before children arrive and after they leave as the team additionally help in tents. We also practise once every week for two months prior to HBW, experience of puppetry and a level of musicality is required. If you would like to lend a hand and become a new member of the team, we will contact you after your application is received to discuss available places.

Main Tent – Band

The band is responsible for providing all live music during HBW, both helping to lead morning worship and all the songs within Main Tent. If you would like to volunteer to be a member of the band, you are welcome to do so, but it is not a guarantee that you will be offered a place. To be considered, you need to be a competent musician/ singer who has experience of playing with others and is able to adapt in real time depending upon the situation and what others are doing. It would also be useful if you have experience of playing Christian music in a church setting. We cannot always promise that what the music says and what we do are the same! If selected, you would need to be available to practice at 3 sessions held before HBW starts (typically 3 Saturdays in July) as well as being prepared for early morning starts each week as we will practice first thing in the morning before HBW starts. If that sounds like a challenge that you would enjoy then please feel free to submit an application

Site – Safety and Logistics

First on site and last to leave, the site safety and logistics team take care of the logistics practical arrangements.

During setup, the team brings van loads of equipment to site and set things up. During the week, they manage car parking, site security. And after the event they pack down and clear the site.

Frequently Asked Questions

You don't need any specific experience to be a volunteer at Holiday Bible Week, but it helps if you enjoy working with children! Whichever team you join, full training will be provided to make sure you know exactly what you’ll need to do during the week.

All our volunteers aged 16+ are required to have an Enhanced DBS check as part of our commitment to safety for all the children on site. We also ask you to provide one reference from the leader of a Christian organisation you are part of.
We would love all our volunteers to be available for the whole week to be a consistent part of the children’s experience.

As a minimum, we ask all volunteers to be available for at least five morning (9.00am–12.30pm) or afternoon (12.30pm–3.30pm) sessions.

Aside from the event itself, you will also be invited to join us at the Commissioning event (Sunday before) and Parents’ Evening (Thursday).
An enhanced check from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is a standard expectation of anywhere responsible for taking care of children. It allows us to check for criminal convictions or cautions for all our volunteers, along with any information held by the local police which may be relevant to your volunteer role.

We ask all our volunteers to have a DBS certificate no more than three years old, and will help you with your application as part of your volunteer registration. You may already have a DBS certificate for another organisation or be part of the DBS Update Service.
